Camelot Vets Team - Sabbath Cup
Camelot RUFC Vets side played in The Sabbath Cup tournament at Hertford on Sunday, 27th April. The matches held were 10 minutes each way, 15 a side rugby. Camelot fielded a good side for this event with the majority of players being ex 1st team of recent years in their mid 30s and 40s and some more mature.
The Hemel Vets sprang into action against Cheshunt in the 1st round, scoring an early try to lead the match 5-0 at half time. Cheshunt chased a lose ball down to score and convert after the restart taking the lead at 5-7. Camelot then launched a series of attacks and broke through to score a second try, winning the game 10-7.
The side launched a powerful attack against Barnet at the start of their second round match. Forwards and backs pressed forward breaking through the defence to score a converted try and lead 7 -0 after 2 minutes. Barnet finally responded with a try but the Camelot Vets continued to dominate play and maintain their lead at 7-5 until the end of the match.
The Camelot Vets faced another tough match against Letchworth in the semi-final. The two sides battled away till full time with no points scored. The Herts. RFU officials then allowed 5 minutes each way sudden death to decide the outcome. Camelot launched a relentless attack and won a penalty just outside the opposition 22. The ball sailed through the posts from a good penalty kick as both players and supporters celebrated Camelot's success at winning their place in the final.
The Camelot team faced a re-match against Barnet who also managed to reach the final. The Hemel side were first to score from a penalty kick soon after the start giving them a 3-point lead. Barnet then won a series of penalties which took them back into the Camelot half where they managed to score a breakaway try which they also converted giving them the lead at 7-3 just before half time. Camelot fought back from the restart pressing into the opposition 22 and threatening the defence. The referee then penalised the side again for a series of offences which took them back to their own 22. Camelot fought on pressing back into the opposition half, coming close to the tryline, but there was no further score before the final whistle blew.
This was a very good performance from the Camelot Vets who displayed some excellent skills from both forwards and backs which took them into the final and made an excellent rugby tournament.
